As of March 2023, the standard UNI EN 17348:2022 has officially become harmonized with the ATEX Directive. This means more stringent requirements for portable and transportable vacuum cleaners designed to collect combustible dust in Zones 20-21-22.
Why is it crucial to adjust?
- Maximum operational safety
In addition to compliance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, EN17348 marking is now mandatory to ensure protection in high-explosive environments. - Clear legal responsibility
Manufacturers, retailers and users now have an obligation to ensure full compliance with the latest standards. - Insurance protection and regulatory compliance
The use of uncertified devices can lead to serious explosion risks, penalties and loss of insurance coverage.
What does the EN 17348 standard provide for?
- Mandatory double filtration
→ Primary filter (≥95 %) + HEPA H14 (≥99.95 %) for use in zone 20. - Strictly tested materials
→ Every component (electrical, metallic, nonmetallic) is checked for sparks, electrostatic charges, and overheating. - Inerting required
→ For conductive powders or those subject to self-ignition.
Strategic complement to EN 17348 for markets outside Europe
In addition to the previous standard, there is IEC 62784, an international standard that defines safety requirements for portable and mobile equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, with emphasis on the prevention of ignition by electrical or mechanical components.
Although it is not harmonized with the ATEX Directive, it is a key global reference adopted in many markets outside Europe. It is particularly relevant for manufacturers exporting outside the European Union, as it complements and reinforces criteria already established by European standards, such as EN 17348. The voluntary adoption of IEC 62784 can also increase the level of intrinsic safety of devices, making them more competitive and reliable even in high-risk international settings.
ACD: protection even outside ATEX zones
Even where ATEX regulations do not apply, safety is not an option.
With ACD marking (IEC 60335-2-69:2021), the vacuum cleaners ensure safe performance even in unclassified areas but where potentially explosive dust is present.
Some examples of configuration for these specific areas:
- EN 17348 indoor + ATEX outdoor for mixed environments
- M-class anti-static filters + HEPA H14 for maximum efficiency and safety
The Dupuy range ensures full compliance with regulatory standards for every environment:
