The 2026 INAIL technical guide on hazardous dust : dust Extraction and air filtration at the heart of industrial safety

The new INAIL Technical Guide on hazardous dust draws attention to an issue that today directly affects safety, production continuity and regulatory compliance.

The presence of dust, fumes and airborne particles in the workplace does not only impact air quality: it can also increase operator exposure, compromise processes, encourage contamination and create risk conditions linked to fires or explosions.

For this reason, dust management can no longer be considered a secondary activity, but an integral part of industrial design and organization.

The new INAIL Technical Guide on hazardous dust: why it matters for your plant

If your plant generates dust, fumes or airborne particles, this topic directly concerns you. The new INAIL Technical Guide places dust management at the center of prevention: not only for operator health, but also for production environment safety, line continuity and compliance with the required standards.

The point is simple: even dust that appears “ordinary” can become a problem if it disperses, accumulates or comes into contact with sensitive processes.

That is why every plant should ask whether the solutions currently in place are truly adequate for the level of risk present, before dust turns into exposure, contamination, machine downtime or ATEX risk.

Hazardous dust: what risks can it create in the workplace?

Airborne dust can have a direct impact on both operators and plant performance. When it is not managed correctly, it can spread through departments, settle on surfaces, build up in critical points of the line and alter operating conditions.

The main risks of hazardous dust

Greater exposure for operators: fumes, fine dust and airborne particles can worsen air quality and increase workers’ contact with potentially critical substances.

Build-up on machines and lines: dust can settle on components, hoppers, pits, packaging machines and transit areas, making cleaning and manual intervention more frequent.

Less stable processes: residues and dispersed particles can slow down production, create inefficiencies and compromise process repeatability.

Higher contamination risk: in more sensitive industries, uncontrolled dust can affect product quality and process hygiene.

Fire or explosion risk: combustible dust such as flour, sugar, biomass, carbonized rubber or metal dust can create critical conditions, especially in ATEX environments.

Unplanned production stops: build-up, contamination and risk conditions can lead to line shutdowns, extraordinary maintenance and loss of operational continuity.

Which plants, machines and production processes require the most attention?

The need to implement suitable systems applies to many production environments. The risk does not depend only on the industry, but also on the type of dust generated, the volume produced, the continuity of the process and the point where the contaminant is released.

Critical issues can arise, for example, in cement production departments, foundries, food plants, pharmaceutical processing, finishing lines, 3D printing applications, biomass plants and processes that generate abrasive, combustible or micronized dust.

Metalworking processes also require attention, particularly when the generation of dust and fumes can affect both safety and line efficiency.

How to manage dust correctly: dust extraction, air filtration and localized suction

To truly reduce risk, it is not enough to act only once dust has already dispersed into the environment. The most effective solution is to act at the point where the contaminant is generated, preventing its spread and limiting accumulation in the workplace.

Why capturing dust at the source is the most effective solution

Source capture makes it possible to intercept dust and contaminants before they spread into the workspace. This approach helps contain the problem at its origin, reducing operator exposure and improving control over the entire production process.

When the system is correctly integrated into the machine, the line or the emission points, dust management becomes more continuous, more effective and less dependent on subsequent cleaning operations.

How to reduce dispersion in the workplace

An effective dust extraction strategy helps to:

capture dust at the source

reduce dispersion in the workplace

improve air quality

protect operators

support cleaner, safer and more efficient production environments

support compliance with the required standards

Why air filtration helps protect operators and plants

Filtration plays a decisive role, especially when dealing with fine or ultrafine particles.

Depending on the risk and the nature of the material, it is possible to adopt systems with pre-separation of coarser particulate, cyclones, high-efficiency separators and filters suitable for the criticality level of the application.

In the most sensitive situations, the choice of filtration must take into account concentration, particle size, dust abrasiveness and the need to safely dispose of the collected material.

The benefits of an effective industrial dust extraction system

A properly designed system does more than simply remove dust. It has a tangible impact on how the plant operates.

It improves air quality in production departments and helps create more controlled working conditions.

It reduces material build-up on lines, machines and surfaces, limiting manual interventions and unplanned downtime. It also helps keep the process more stable and contain component wear, especially in heavy-duty or highly abrasive applications.

In contexts where safety is closely linked to particulate management, an effective solution also makes it possible to address the risks associated with combustible, explosive or health-critical dust with greater control.

Key features to consider when choosing a solution

Every application requires a specific assessment. The choice of the most suitable system depends on several factors:

Nature of the dust, volume and generation point

It is important to consider whether the dust is fine, abrasive, combustible, micronized or potentially explosive, as well as the volumes to be treated and the points where it is produced.

Need for integration on machines or plants

In some cases, it is preferable to install localized systems directly connected to the work equipment.

In others, especially when multiple lines or large surfaces are involved, centralized systems with fixed piping networks may be more effective.

Specific requirements in ATEX environments or with critical dust

When the material being processed has combustible characteristics or requires advanced containment, it is essential to choose solutions designed to operate under specific conditions, with technologies and configurations consistent with the level of risk.

Rely on DUPUY for hazardous dust management

DUPUY designs dust extraction, air filtration and industrial suction solutions engineered to integrate into production processes and meet the real needs of each plant.

From welding fume capture to laser cutting dust management, through applications in metalworking, food, pharmaceutical or combustible dust environments, the goal is to provide systems capable of improving safety, efficiency and operational continuity.

Whether the requirement is localized suction, centralized systems, high-efficiency filtration or safe collection systems for extracted material, a properly sized solution allows dust management to be handled in a more structured and reliable way.

FAQ

What does the new INAIL Technical Guide on hazardous dust cover?

The guide highlights the need to assess plants, machinery and production processes in relation to the presence of hazardous dust, linking the topic to prevention, compliance and workplace responsibility.

When is an industrial dust extraction system needed?

It is needed whenever a production process generates dust, fumes or airborne particles that may compromise air quality, increase operator exposure, create build-up or lead to operational and safety-critical issues.

Why is source capture more effective than cleaning alone?

Because it intercepts the contaminant at the point where it is produced, immediately reducing dispersion into the environment and limiting build-up, exposure and subsequent manual interventions.

Dust management is a strategic choice for safety and efficiency

Today, correctly addressing the issue of hazardous dust means protecting people, improving working conditions and making production processes more reliable. The renewed technical and regulatory focus confirms that dust extraction, air filtration and industrial suction are not accessory elements, but central tools for building safer and higher-performing environments.

Dupuy presents UFO Flow, the new electric fan that marks a concrete evolution in the DEDUST PRO range, designed for the extraction of suspended fine dust in industrial processing.

Thanks to a complete redesign of the header, the UFO system eliminates the external chimney and introduces a more compact, stable and functional structure, optimizing airflow and ensuring full ATEX Zone 22 compliance.

Compactness that makes a difference

The innovation stems from the redesign of the electric fan cowl, which allowed the layout of the machine to be radically reorganized.

The external chimney is eliminated, and the entire airflow is handled internally within the structure, reducing the overall height and resulting in a machine that is neater in form and easier to integrate into production spaces. The internal arrangement of components is optimized to increase structural balance and improve overall stability. The downward redistribution of weights lowers the center of gravity, making the machine more stable in use and easier to handle.

When maintenance becomes an operational advantage

One of the most concrete benefits of the new UFO Flow is the simplification of maintenance:
– Direct and quick access to filters and motor
– Elimination of bulky external piping
– Easily removable components
– Reduced response time, with positive impact on production continuity and operating costs

More efficient airflow

The internal air path has been completely redesigned to reduce turbulence and pressure drop, improving operational stability and intake quality.
The result is a more uniform airflow, which enables:
– Improved capture at the source
– Increased efficiency and regularity

Ready for ATEX Zone 22 environments

The new DEDUST PRO series with the UFO Flow header is designed to operate in potentially explosive environments classified as ATEX Zone 22, in accordance with Directive 2014/34/EU.
It is therefore suitable for the extraction of suspended combustible dust that occurs occasionally and for short periods, ensuring maximum safety and reliability in the most sensitive production settings.

In the metalworking industry, the management of metal chips and cutting oil is a key activity to ensure production continuity. Every industry, large or small, has to deal every day with a large amount of scrap generated by machining operations: steel, aluminum, brass, cast iron, emulsions and coolants. These materials, if not properly managed with oil and chip suction systems, can cause damage to machine tools, increase costs and reduce productivity.

This guide delves into:

Why metal swarf extraction is strategic and what risks are avoided,

How modern industrial vacuum cleaners work,

What benefits they bring to production,

The next innovations in oil and chip extraction.

Why is oil and chip extraction essential in machining?

Any machining process, such as turning, milling, drilling or grinding, produces a lot of metal chips and requires the continuous use of coolant lubricants. During the process, swarf and oil mix, forming a dense compound that is difficult to handle without suitable equipment. When these materials accumulate in machine tool tanks, the space fills up quickly and pumps are likely to get stuck, causing unplanned stoppages and slowdowns for the entire department.

The constant presence of swarf within the coolant also worsens machining quality: if not removed properly, swarf can scratch the workpiece, reduce accuracy and increase scrap. Over time, this mix of dirty oil and metal residue accelerates wear on pumps, tools and internal circuits, resulting in higher maintenance costs.

Another important aspect concerns the durability of coolants. If they are not filtered well, they quickly lose their properties and must be replaced more often, with both economic and environmental impacts. The safety of the work environment is also affected: wet floors, slippery surfaces and scattered residues increase the risk of accidents and make the department less safe.

For all these reasons, equipping oneself with a professional oil and chip vacuum system is no longer just an option, but a necessity for any workshop that wants to maintain high productivity, reduce downtime and ensure quality machining.

How does an industrial vacuum cleaner work?

An industrial chip vacuum is a machine designed to simultaneously vacuum, separate and handle oil and chips. Unlike ordinary vacuum cleaners, these units have dedicated metalworking components and are designed to work continuously. Dupuy solutions, for example, have a professional internal filtration and separation system that simplifies maintenance activities in mechanical departments.

Simultaneous suction of solids and liquids

Dupuy oil and chip vacuums vacuum together:

metal shavings,

emulsions,

cutting oils,

Sludge and mixed residues.

Once inside, the material is immediately separated to avoid clogging and to ensure orderly handling.

Internal separation of materials

The system is based on three elements:

Gridded basket
Holds metal shavings.

Lower liquid chamber
Collects filtered oil free of solids.

Dedicated filters
Prevent the passage of the smallest impurities. This process makes it possible to work even on large volumes without the risk of overloading or clogging.

Oil recovery and recycling via booster pumps

Many Dupuy vacuum cleaners include a booster pump that sends the filtered coolant back to the machine tool.
The benefits are immediate:

Less oil waste,

Reducing disposal costs,

Increased process stability,

Bettertool protection.

This feature makes it possible to talk about sustainable management of cooling lubricants, which is also a very important issue today from an environmental perspective.

Why do industrial vacuum cleaners improve productivity?

The use of industrial vacuum cleaners can significantly increase the productivity of mechanical departments because it ensures a more stable workflow and reduces all those interruptions that often slow down production.

When chips and coolants are removed in a continuous and orderly manner, machine tools work better, without risking clogging or sudden blockages. Workpiece surfaces are cleaner and more precise because scrap does not get trapped in critical areas during machining.

A dedicated oil and swarf suction system also keeps internal tanks cleaner, prolonging pump life and reducing extraordinary maintenance. A tidier and safer working environment, without slippery floors or residue accumulation, improves operator comfort and reduces time lost to urgent cleaning. In addition, recovery of filtered coolants saves on fluid costs and allows operators to work with more consistent quality over time.

All these aspects, added together, make industrial vacuum cleaners a solution that not only optimizes residue management, but also contributes directly to the production continuity and competitiveness of the entire workshop.

Compact vacuum cleaners for small workshops,

High-capacity systems for multi-shift departments,

Vacuum units for handling large quantities of chips.

Each model is designed to improve productivity and reduce operating costs. For example, the Chipvac400, which we discuss in the video below, is equipped with a manual filter cleaning system consisting of a vertically moving shaker. This allows the operator to clean the filter effortlessly and at any time, prolonging the life of the filter and preventing a reduction in suction performance.

Future challenges and trends in oil extraction

The engineering sector is changing rapidly. Companies are looking for increasingly automated and intelligent systems related to Industry 4.0.
In the near future, technologies that enable:

Monitor coolant levels,

Analyze oil status in real time,

Automating the emptying of tanks,

Reduce waste,

Optimize internal chip logistics,

Integrate suction machines with management software.

Industrial vacuum cleaners are already aligned with these trends because they offer an automatic separation and recovery process.

There is something profoundly simple and powerful about using the right words. We have chosen to tell who we are and where we want to go with just two words: Breathe Clean. It is not a slogan, but a true statement of purpose for those who work in industrial environments every day.

Why a new payoff?

Every company evolves, grows, questions itself. Over the past few years, we have expanded our expertise and our vision, with a clear goal: to improve the quality of air in work spaces.
The new payoff was born out of a desire to represent what really matters to us: creating healthier industrial environments, more sustainable solutions, and making a tangible contribution to the safety and well-being of those who work.

What does “Breathe Clean” mean?

For us, “Breathe Clean” is not just a call for clean air-it is a concrete commitment to health and safety in the workplace.
It means designing with industrial air quality in mind, offering solutions that protect operators and companies, and promoting a more conscious and safer way of working.
A message that looks to the future, where air quality is central to productivity, sustainability and health.

A simple, direct and universal message. ” BreatheClean” expresses a primary need-breathing-that becomes the heart of the Dupuy promise: to filter, purify and ensure clean air in industrial environments.
The word clean encapsulates a double value: healthy air to breathe guaranteed by our air dedusting and filtration systems, and physical cleanliness generated by industrial vacuum cleaners.
Breathe Clean will be our guide for the coming years: it will guide our design choices and products.

Find out how we are shaping this commitment: keep following us. The change toward safer and cleaner workplaces has just begun.

Maximum operational safety In addition to compliance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, EN17348 […]

As of March 2023, the standard UNI EN 17348:2022 has officially become harmonized with the ATEX Directive. This means more stringent requirements for portable and transportable vacuum cleaners designed to collect combustible dust in Zones 20-21-22.

Why is it crucial to adjust?

Maximum operational safety
In addition to compliance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, EN17348 marking is now mandatory to ensure protection in high-explosive environments.

Clear legal responsibility
Manufacturers, retailers and users now have an obligation to ensure full compliance with the latest standards.

Insurance protection and regulatory compliance
The use of uncertified devices can lead to serious explosion risks, penalties and loss of insurance coverage.

What does the EN 17348 standard provide for?

Mandatory double filtration
→ Primary filter (≥95 %) + HEPA H14 (≥99.95 %) for use in zone 20.

Strictly tested materials
→ Every component (electrical, metallic, nonmetallic) is checked for sparks, electrostatic charges, and overheating.

Inerting required
→ For conductive powders or those subject to self-ignition.

Strategic complement to EN 17348 for markets outside Europe

In addition to the previous standard, there is IEC 62784, an international standard that defines safety requirements for portable and mobile equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, with emphasis on the prevention of ignition by electrical or mechanical components.

Although it is not harmonized with the ATEX Directive, it is a key global reference adopted in many markets outside Europe. It is particularly relevant for manufacturers exporting outside the European Union, as it complements and reinforces criteria already established by European standards, such as EN 17348. The voluntary adoption of IEC 62784 can also increase the level of intrinsic safety of devices, making them more competitive and reliable even in high-risk international settings.

ACD: protection even outside ATEX zones

Even where ATEX regulations do not apply, safety is not an option.
With ACD marking (IEC 60335-2-69:2021), the vacuum cleaners ensure safe performance even in unclassified areas but where potentially explosive dust is present.

Some examples of configuration for these specific areas:

EN 17348 indoor + ATEX outdoor for mixed environments

M-class anti-static filters + HEPA H14 for maximum efficiency and safety
